most of the words in Classical Chinese was monosyllabic and was written with a single character.but during the 1920s a new form of written Chinese was modelled on spoken Mandarin was developed. Most Chinese publications since then have been written in this form, Up Until the 20Th century, Classical Chinese, was the main form of writing in China. It was standardised during the late Han Dynasty 25-220 AD it was also used in Japan, Korea,and Vietnam before they developed their own writing systems. The largest Chinese dictionaries have about 56,000 characters, but most of them are archaic, obscure or rare variant forms. if you have the Knowledge of at least 3,000 characters you will be able to read about 99% of the characters used in Chinese magazines and newspapers. you will need to be familiar with about 6,000 characters.to read technical writing, Classical Chinese or Chinese literature.
