American English (variously abbreviated AE, AmE, USEng, AmEng, en-US), also known as United States English or U.S. English, is a set of dialects of the English language mostly used in the United States. Of all native English speakers approximately two thirds live in the United States.

Of all languages spoken in the United States English is the most common. Even though the US Federal government has no official language, English is considered the de facto language of the United States due to its widespread use. English has been given official status by 30 of the 50 state governments.

The use of English in the United States was inherited from British colonization. The first wave of English-speaking settlers arrived in North America in the 17th century. In North America there were also speakers of Spanish, French, Dutch, German, Norwegian, Swedish, Scots, Welsh, Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Finnish, Russian (Alaska) and a variety of other Native American languages.

American Sign Language (or ASL, Ameslan) is the dominant sign language of the Deaf community in the United States, in parts of Mexico and in the English-speaking parts of Canada. Although the United Kingdom and the United States share English as a spoken and written language, British Sign Language (BSL) is quite different from ASL, and the two sign languages are not mutually comprehensible.

ASL is also used (sometimes alongside indigenous sign languages) in Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Dominican Republic, Haiti, El Salvador, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Chad, Philippines, Gabon, Kenya, Madagascar, Zimbabwe and various others. Like other sign languages, its grammar and syntax are distinct from any spoken language in its area of influence. Estimates of people that use American Sign LAnguage and their primary language range from 500,000 to 2 million in the U.S. alone.
